ABOUT ME | TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Hello. My name is Aimée Burt-Hawkins, and I am, first and foremost, a mother to four amazing children. I am also a wife, sister, daughter, friend, dog and cat mom, teacher, and lover of art, music, and food.
I have been immersed in art and mark-making for over 40 years! This longevity has increased my areas of interest and has continually fueled my passion for learning and discovering a wide variety of art and media. I have studied fine art, photography, graphic art, bookmaking, and dabble in fiber arts. I love to experiment and learn. This curiosity and eagerness to continually learn are beneficial to my students as I express my zest and enthusiasm for creating.
I teach using an eclectic combination of old and new ideas and pedagogy. From the formalized techniques of
Discipline-Based Art Education (DBAE) to the Constructivist theories of Big Ideas and Teaching for Artistic Behaviour (TAB), I find success in balancing long-standing formal techniques and methods with today’s approaches to teaching modern/contemporary art curricula.
By showing the process of making, introducing different art media, and having students experiment and “play” with materials, we can help them become more confident in their mark-making.
I believe that the experience of making is as important as the art itself. My students will have the opportunity to play and experiment with media to find their creative voice as artists.
Through this discovery and experimentation, my students will also be introduced to the art that has come before and is currently being made. We will acknowledge the history and culture of art, which is essential for a deeper understanding and appreciation of art.
